How to choose an area in Calgary
Calgary is organised in quadrants (NW, NE, SW, SE) around the Centre Street and Bow River axes, and the quadrant is part of every address. Within them, newer suburbs ring the city, established communities sit inside the ring road (Stoney Trail), and inner-city neighbourhoods surround downtown. A few things Roni asks before recommending an area:
- Commute and transit. The CTrain’s Red and Blue lines, the Green Line under construction, and which side of Deerfoot Trail or Glenmore Trail you will cross daily.
- Schools. Public, Catholic, French immersion, Jewish day schools in the southwest, and the Saturday heritage schools covered in the community guides.
- Community anchors. Synagogues and the JCC campus in the southwest, the Ukrainian churches in Bridgeland, the Russian Orthodox parishes in the northeast and southeast, delis and markets. See the community guides.
- Housing type and age. Lake communities in the southeast, acreages to the north and west, 1950s–70s bungalows inside the ring road, and new builds on the edges.
- Resale. What sells easily in each area, and what sits.
